INTRODUCTION KOCHIA
Kochia (Kochia scoparia) is a dicot weed in the Chenopodiaceae family.  In Czech Republic this weed first evolved multiple resistance (to 2 herbicide sites of action) in 1996 and infests Railways, and Roadsides.  Multiple resistance has evolved to herbicides in the Groups 2 (Legacy B), and PSII inhibitors - Serine 264 Binders HRAC Group 5 (Legacy C1 C2).  These particular biotypes are known to have resistance to atrazine, chlorsulfuron, imazapyr, metsulfuron-methyl, nicosulfuron, prosulfuron, rimsulfuron, sulfosulfuron, thifensulfuron-methyl, tribenuron-methyl, and triflusulfuron-methyl and they may be cross-resistant to other herbicides in the Groups 2 (Legacy B), and PSII inhibitors - Serine 264 Binders HRAC Group 5 (Legacy C1 C2).

The 'Group' letters/numbers that you see throughout this web site refer to the classification of herbicides by their site of action. To see a full list of herbicides and HRAC herbicide classifications click here.

If we do not have a picture for this weed, or you can provide a better picture (scan, digital camera etc) please please e-mail it to us.

NOTES ABOUT THIS BIOTYPE

AREAS FOUND

Daniela Chodová
Jan Mikulka Kochia scoparia is classified among foreign expansive weeds. The occurrence of imazapyr resistant kochia was identified in 1996 in railroad areas following irregular applications of imazapyr and atrazine. This species is spreading to other localities than those along the railroads (crossroad, roads, unkept areas).

GENETICS

Daniela Chodová
Jaroslav Salava, Daniela Chodová, Jan Mikulka The resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides in all Czech kochia (Kochia scoparia /L./ Schrad.) biotypes studied was conferred by a mutation at codon 574 of the ALS gene. Analysis of the results of DNA sequencing indicated that the mutation induced a leucine for tryptophan substitution.

GENETICS

Daniela Chodová
Daniela Chodová, Jaroslav Salava The ploidy level and chromosome numbers were verified in nine Czech of kochia from various sites with different susceptibility to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting and atrazine herbicides. Radicles 5-15 mm in length from pre-germinated seeds of kochia were used for karyologic analysis. None of eleven examined populations comprised a case where all 50 analyzed roots would have the diploid number of chromosomes (2n=18). Tetraploidy (4n=36) of low frequency was found in a population with multiple resistance to atrazine and ALS inhibitors. Besides diploids a high frequency of mixoploids was recorded

ACADEMIC ASPECTS

Confirmation Tests

Field, Greenhouse, and Laboratory trials comparing a known susceptible Kochia biotype with this Kochia biotype have been used to confirm resistance. For further information on the tests conducted please contact the local weed scientists that provided this information.

Genetics

Genetic studies on HRAC Group 2, 5 resistant Kochia indicate that the inheritance is determined by a nuclear trait.  There may be a note below or an article discussing the genetics of this biotype in the Fact Sheets and Other Literature

Mechanism of Resistance

Studies on the mechanism of resistance of multiple resistant Kochia from Czech Republic indicate that resistance is due to an altered target site.  There may be a note below or an article discussing the mechanism of resistance in the Fact Sheets and Other Literature

Relative Fitness

Researchers have indicated that Group 2, 5/B, C1 C2 resistant Kochia is ecologically less fit than normal susceptible Kochia.  There may be a note below or an article discussing the fitness of this biotype in the Fact Sheets and Other Literature
